Why are algebraic fractions even worse? Here’s what we think:
“First of all algebra fractions are called Rational Expressions. They have a polynomial over a polynomial. That’s a lot!”
“They aren’t whole numbers, duh.”
“You might have to factor. In fact, you will have to factor.”
“It follows you in every math class.”
“They look intimidating.”
“They contain variables and usually exponents.”
“Algebraic fractions encompass all previously learned math concepts.”
“You can have complex algebraic rational expressions. Even worse.”
“One tiny mistake messes up the entire problem.”
“One problem can take a whole sheet of paper.”
“Rational expressions are abstract, not concrete. With arithmetic fractions you can understand them when you relate them to pizzas. We all eat pizza and we know a third of a pizza is less than half. You can’t do that with rational expressions.”
Some of my favorite math! 🙂 It gets easier with practice.
